Retroceded to the Romanian territory after the Congress of Berlin of 1878, Dobrudgea is a place of tolerance. After the Peace of Bucharest of 1913, the Quadrilateral was added to the Romanian territory. During the World War I, Dobrudgea and the Quadrilateral were under Bulgarian control for two years. After the war ended, both Dobrudgea and the Quadrilateral belonged to Romania and the Orthodox Church set up here the Diocese of Tomis. Nevertheless, în 1940, the Quadrilateral was retroceded to the Bulgarian territory. During the communist regime, the inhabitants of Dobrudgea were persecuted. Some of these martyrs of the communist terror were Orthodox priests. The communist authorities dissolved parishes and shut down most of the monasteries |
