The term "discourse" implies a scientific, academic, diplomatic, official background, very close to norms / normativism. It also supposes a "height", a style and a stylistic outfit that makes it impeccable. Euphemisms are more or less characterized by mutability, depending on the discourse in which they are used/ updated. The euphemisms in the social-political field, which, by their very nature, are closer to those of diplomatic discourse, have an arbitrary, ephemeral and in most cases decipherable connotations. If the current political language is aggressive, arrogant, offensive, often even violent, then diplomatic discourse, on the contrary, tends to avoid aggression at any cost; verbal violence is practically camouflaged or avoided. In diplomatic discourse, things, facts, ideas are attenuated, paraphrased, implicit. In this type of discourse, the euphemism and the taboo "are at home". Euphemism, along with other tropes and stylistic figures, is part of the diplomatic terminology and has virtually the same longevity as diplomatic history itself. It would be incorrect to believe that "the diplomatic euphemism and taboo of the 19th century "are identical to those of the 20th and 21st centuries. We are witnessing an obvious evolution of these "mechanisms", which we will discuss in more detail in this article. |
