Rezumat

In this article, we intend to look at how one of the most common concepts of taboo in the French ethnology, reflected in the studies of Emile Durkheim and Arnold Van Gennep. For Emile Durkheim, every cult has a double look: one negative, the other positive. In the chapter devoted to the main ritual attitudes, the author reserves a very generous space to the interdiction analysis, which he calls a negative cult. In the negative cult, Durkheim distinguishes two types of prohibitions: religious and magical. The difference between the two categories is the nature of the prohibitions. According to his opinion, the religious prohibition comes from the respect that the sacred object inspires, while the magic ones are based on the profane sense of ownership and have a pragmatic character. Of particular significance are the author's judgments about the system of prohibitions related to sacred/profane space and time, which can be reduced to two fundamental, predominant interdictions: religious life and profane life can not coexist within the same space and within the same time units. Unlike Durkheim, Arnold Van Gennep defines the taboo as galloping, summarizing, placing it imperatively in the category of negative rites and reducing its essence to a complementary reaction to a volunteer act. It is noteworthy that both ethnologists draw attention to the quasi-generic character of interdictions and the determinant role they play in the context of folk culture.
