Rezumat

Hundreds of thousands of Romanian militaries died on the front and in the military hospitals during the World War I outbroken in Romania too. Many other militaries and civil people from Moldova died because of many diseases. Thousands of children were orphans as a result needing the help of the state. Besides the efforts of the Romanian authorities who took good care of the orphans, we can also remember the activity of the parish priests who contributed to their protection. The military priests who knew the dramatic realities of the villages of Moldova have also come to aid the orphans whom they tried to guide to the orphanages organised in the great cities and monasteries. Two orphanages were set up by help of the National Orthodox Society of the Romanian Women – Orphans’ Protection Department at Agapia and Varatec, the nuns of the two convents having contributed to their operating. A school and a dispensary for children operated within these convents. The direct administration of the two orphanages was entrusted to Professor Dumitru Boroianu from the Faculty of Theology of Bucharest, supported especially by princess Olga Sturdza, president of the National Orthodox Society of the Romanian Women. The efforts made for maintaining the orphans and for opening a school prove the devotion of the nuns from the two convents, as well as the special care of the Orthodox clergy for protecting those who suffered because of the war
