In terms of the present norms, the category of adjective poses challenges in forms, flexion, compatibility or incompatibility with the comparison degrees etc. As for the forms, most adjectives are variable. The invariables belong to the old and informal heritage of the language, come from adverbs, are neologisms (from the last category, some tend to create adjusted yet incorrect variants, such as eşarfă roză, şcolari perspicaci). The phonetical alternances (along with inflexions, marking for gender, number and case) are often a problem for the speakers of the Romanian language. The reason is that a large number of them, even still present in the flexion of the older and informal adjectives, are no longer a part of the neological adjectives, namely pofticios, pofticioasă, but echivoc, echivocă (at times, the norms accept in a free variation both the forms with and without alternances as in omologă/ omoloagă). The compound adjectives frequently raise an issue about the use of the flexionary forms. The structure and the compounding degree are very important to this purpose. Hence, we will have correct forms in nou-născută, nou-născuţi, nou-născute (where ‚nou’ has an adverb value), but also nouă-nouţă, noi-nouţi, noi-nouţe (here, the first element is an adjective). From mainly semantic reasons, a series of qualifying adjectives are not compatible with the comparison degrees (eg. cele mai optime condiţii is a pleonasm). The study also makes reference to the word order and certain current norms regarding this part of speech.
