The stylistic-pragmatic orientation of the diplomatic text is obvious. The diplomatic text (discourse) is the outcome of a specific communicational situation, having well defined, most of the time, evident semantic, lexical-phraseological and stylistic peculiarities. At the same time, the diplomacy and its terminological system occur in a specific socio-political and socio-discursive context. It sometimes happens that ordinary representatives blame the diplomats for "saying things just for the sake of saying", "talking for saying nothing" and "not acting". For such critics, diplomacy (the diplomatic discourse) is equated to speech management, to a discourse machine within the power, to the State apparatus and international bodies. If the diplomatic text ("the word") does not cover the ensemble of diplomatic behaviors and acts, it is obvious that this complex subject suffers from the bad image of which language and speech are often infused. Briefly, the diplomatic speech is made either to say few things (then the euphemism triumphs), or to hide something (then metaphors, epithets, metonyms and personifications are there). In the case of the diplomatic text, the main importance consists in examining its immediate and socio-political contexts in which it has been produces as an actual requisite. The diplomatic text is essentially constructive and often metaphorical. It is oriented by an outcome and guided by a strategy. In the specialized bibliography one can single out several outcomes of the diplomatic texts: diplomatic context; diplomatic metaphor; diplomatic behavior; diplomatic style; deliver a diplomatic speech. The strategies applied to the diplomatic text (discourse) are aimed at inferring (masking) its final outcomes by means of hidden stylistic and semantic connotations. |
