Rezumat

The article discusses the position of the Giurgiuleşti cemetery on the Lower Danube in chronological and cultural systems of prehistoric South-Eastern and Eastern Europe. New radiocarbon dates enable to place the cemetery more reliably in the third quarter of the 5th millennium BC and synchronize it with Eneolithic or Copper Age farming cultures with highly developed metallurgical technology in the Balkan-Carpathian region and synchronous cultural groups in the steppe zone. Cultural attribution of the burial site is considered on the basis of anthropological data, sources of raw materials, technological traits of different objects, funerary rite as well as typology and pattern of the distribution of grave goods. This evidence testifies to rather local cultural roots of the community which founded this cemetery. The buried individuals could represent remnants of indigenous Mesolithic population which experienced rapid and essential cultural transformation under strong influence of neighboring Eneolithic Balkan-Carpathian societies. The structure of the cemetery and various traits of the funerary ceremony clearly reflect comptex social processes which took place in the second half of the 5th millennium BC both in the Balkan-Carpathian region and in the southern part of Eastern Europe.
