The family remains, however, the main framework for child development, and the way in which it performs its specific functions influences the functioning of the society as a whole through a variety of factors. The reality of this issue is determined by the situation in the contemporary society that is facing a serious problem, unfortunately in full ascendance, namely child abuse, a problem that concerns and alarm society, and especially professionals in the field of child protection and family. The lack of theoretical knowledge of the terms, concepts, theories related to the problem of child abuse, the consequences of these phenomena on the child's development, the legal shortcomings in child protection, the relatively small number of trained specialists and practical experience in this field constitute, besides the complexity and the difficulty of intervening in such cases, real obstacles to diminishing and preventing child abuse and neglect. Maltreatment and abuse within the family affect the development of the child in its essential dimensions. The effects of these phenomena are profound and unfavorable, accompanying the child throughout his life. Knowing and understanding the child's needs according to his developmental stages, by the parents and adults with whom he interacts, is the opportunity to relate to him correctly and to trace elements of trauma, acting prophylactically and therapeutically. Considering the fact that parents should not see the child as a good of their own, but as a person with their own personality, I think it is necessary to intervene where the family fails to educate and raise the child. This intervention must be in the best interests of the child, but also in the interest of the family. To prevent and combat child abuse, child protection specialists, parents, teachers, the community will have to meddle more often and answer the following question: Why do we need to change something?: • To strike a child is a violation of his fundamental rights as a human being; • Physical punishment is a dangerous practice, sometimes causing serious "accidental" injuries or degene-rating into a behavior known as child abuse; • The physical punishment imposed on the child determines the taking of violent attitudes and behaviors - violence generates violence; • Physical punishment teaches nothing positive about the child; • The neglected child is marked by an attitude of indifference or shyness and the inability to organize his / her free activity.
