Starting from the premise that nonfiction reflects the organic form by which the novelists relate to literature, diarism provides a version of the `autobiographical pact` (Philippe Lejeune), oscillating between self-disclosure and self-camouflage (Mihăieş 2005b, p. 12). In Eugen Simion’s optics, the journal agrees with a fiction of the nonfiction nonficțiunii (Simion 2001, vol. I), thus it involves a certain functional mechanism in which the Romanian narrative techniques are inherent. This article aims to treat the intimate diary as a metaliterary mediator, a game of egos, and also an intermediary between the narrator and the narratee, thus elucidating the issue of the typology formulated by Orhan Pamuk in Thenaive and sentimental novelist (if limits can be set when speaking about intimism), with a focus on the boundary between the writer and the living person, considering that the existence of this paradigmatic delimitation influences the diary writing. Without emphasizing the diachronic dimension of the approaches, the study will analyse three styles of confessions typical of the modern and postmodern periods that have succeeded in overcoming the convention of `drawer literature` as follows: Virginia Woolf, A writer’s diary; Umberto Eco, Confessions of a young Novelist; Haruki Murakami, What I talk about when I talk about running.
