Rezumat

The purpose of this work was to assess the properties of new composite materials applied in electromagnetic protection against radiations generated by computers and other similar electronic devices which use a monitor display. This paper is divided in two parts: one is related to the presentation and characterization of some polymeric composite materials that have proved to have shielding properties and, the other one describes the instrument applied to assess the hazard that could arise from electromagnetic pollution. In this study case, the shielding materials were applied for protection against electromagnetic radiations generated by a new flat-screen LCD monitor and other old-type tube CRT monitor, thus their main purpose is to protect the human health according to the international standards. The hazard index (HI) was applied to assess the use of these shielding materials in computer monitor's manufacture. This study considered various samples of shielding materials provided from different companies. The results revealed there is no risk for human health, in the case of using the appropriate shielding materials based on metallic insertion even if the worst scenario of old-type tube CRT monitor is considered.
