On October 27, 1918, a meeting of representatives of the Romanians of Bukovina took place in Chernivtsi, which was proclaimed Constitutive. At this meeting, it was decided to “unite entire Bukovina with the other Romanian countries in an independent national state” and proceed to this purpose in complete solidarity with the Romanians from Transylvania and Hungary. On the same day, 50 members were elected into the Romanian National Council and an executive committee was created, with Iancu Flondor elected as president. On November 11, 1918, the Romanian army entered Chernivtsi, and in the following days took control of the entire territory of Bukovina. On November 12, the government of Bukovina was created, being headed by Iancu Flondor (president). On November 25, 50 new members were co-opted into the Romanian National Council, including 12 Bukovinian refugees. On November 28, 1918, the General Assembly of Bukovina convened, and decided “the unconditional and unceasing union of Bukovina, in its old frontiers up to Cheremosh, Colachin and Dniester Rivers, with the Kingdom of Romania”. After nearly a year of negotiations at the Paris Peace Conference, Bukovina’s union with Romania was officially recognized. |
