In order to establish the identity of a medieval ethnic group, the correlation between language, ethnicity and civilization is the methodological direction that research should focus on. In establishing the link between a population and the civilization community, Christianity, which constituted the ideological foundation of the unity of European peoples in the period, becomes a special subject of study. The sources of this period mention several distinctive features of the Romanian community in the Middle Ages: the Romanian language and origin, the tradition of the Romanity adopted in the new historical context, the Orthodox confession and the membership in the Eastern Church, whose center was the Patriarchate of Constantinople. In the case of the Romanians, Orthodox ethics represent an ensemble of moral values, beliefs, liturgical and para-liturgical practices capable of generating a way of life and a form of ethnic identity. At the same time, Romanian Orthodoxy has not only exclusively religious aspects, but it can also be understood as a set of social and political practices with a sense of cultural homologation and identity recognition. The purpose of the study is to analyze those elements of Romanian Orthodoxy that manifest themselves in the public space through social practices, constituting the foundation of community organization and a form of ethnic identity. |
