Mining industry in Armenia is a key source of environmental pollution, particularly heavy-metal contamination of soil, water, and air. The Syunik Marz has three of the largest mining companies in Armenia, which exploit copper and gold-polymetallic deposits in the region and which have five tailing ponds. The independent monitoring of the top soil and drinking and irrigation water, collected from the kindergartens and schools of six mining communities in Syunik Marz, has been undertaken to assess the impact of the heavy metals by mining activities and its effect on the environment and children’s health. For this purpose, five metals in soil and twelve metals in water samples were measured using portable heavy metals analysis system (Metalyser HM2000 Deluxe, Soils, Trace2o), with a combination of electrochemical and photometric methods. The study shows that arsenic, copper, and in some cases lead, mercury and cadmium were present in high enough to concentrations to raise concerns about children’s health. The concentration of these metals exceeded the Armenian soil standards as well as many other international soil standards. Irrigation water taken from Kavart, Karchevan, and Vogji rivers, also has high levels of metals, such as iron, nickel, copper and manganese and is not suitable for irrigation purpose. |
