Nowadays much attention of scientific community is paid to the class of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The ever growing interest lays in different areas that MOFs can be used, as they usually display pores of different size, shape, and volume that enables them to perform the desired function in a particular application [1]. There are many recent reports based on the structure, design, applications of these materials, but still a large amount of papers are dedicated to their synthesis [2-3]. During the atempts to obtain MOFs using nickel nitrate hexahydrate, 1,4-bis((1H-imidazoyl-1- yl)methyl)benzene (BIB) and 1,2,3-benzenetricarboxylic acid (1,2,3-BTC), a decarboxylation reaction in the second position of the acid occurs. The in-situ formation of 1,3-benzenedicarboxylic acid (1,3-BDC) leads to an interesting assembly of the coordination polymer (Fig.1). Fig. 1. The asymmetric unit and the architecture of the MOF. One of the carboxylic group of the 1,3-BDC chelate in a bidentate manner two metal ions, whereas another carboxylic group acts as a monodentate ligand. The nickel(II) ions display a six coordinate distorted octahedral geometry. A water molecule completes the coordination sphere at the metal center so that the coordinating node is NiN2 BIBO3 1,3-BDCOH 2 O. The MOF displays a “bulky” structure that makes difficult the inclusion of other molecules, but still the sorption properties are being tested. |
