Implementation of the hiv prevention programmes among injection drug users based on the harm reduction strategy in Moldova. The HIV/AIDS infection continues to be a priority problem in the public health system of the Republic of Moldova. From 1987 to 2007, 4131 new cases of the infection have been diagnosed. Until the year 2000 the epidemic process was determined by infection spread among IDU’s. In the last years infection among IDU’s has decreased from 72.8% in 2001 to 30.37% in 2007. The number of those infected sexually has increased from 20.3% in 2001 to 68.67% in 2007.The provision of access to sterile injection equipment for injecting drug users and the encouragement of its use are essential components of HIV/AIDS prevention programmes, and should be seen as a part of overall comprehensive strategies to reduce the demand for illicit drugs. A network of NGO’s that actively work on HIV prophylaxis based on harm reduction strategy is established in the country. 15 NGOs are being implemented Harm Reduction projects for IDU’s in 21 localities of RM. The following services are available for IDUs: syringe exchange, condom distribution, distribution of informational materials, voluntary counseling and testing, referral system for the necessary medical assistance. Information and education of target groups and their immediate social contacts, focused on avoiding high-risk behavior are available. Former drug users and peers are well involved in this process.
