This article analyzes the legal status of the women in the Principality of Moldavia and Wallachia in the 17th century. The written legislation is the most important historical source when it comes women's rights and obligations, as well as their place within the family and in the society. Therefore, the legal code of the 17th century describes women based on age, social status and theirbelonging to a monastery community. Women are described in the followingpositions when it comes to their relationship with men: woman (female), wife, daughter, widow. The legal sources of the 17th century make a clear distinction between women when it comes to their state of morality. The legislation regulated the relation between women and society, having a big impact on the Romanian collective mentality. The historical sources prove that women were discriminated against in the Romanian Principalities, a clear hierarchy being established both withinthe family and in the society. |
