Rezumat

Holographic recording is an optical technology that enables microfabrication of structures with features comparable with the wavelength of recording beams, for example, diffraction gratings, metamaterials, and metasurfaces in optically active media. An increasing number of studies on azo dye containing materials was focused on application in holographic recording due to photoisomerization, photoorientation and nonlinear effects that can be implemented in storing, retrieving, rewriting and processing information. In this work, we demonstrate that the amplitude of photoinduced reversible refractive index modulation in azo polymer quest-host films caused by holographic recording can be efficiently tuned by an additional optical beam. We performed the holographic recording of phase gratings (PGs) in disperse red 1 (DR1) polymer films by the interference of two coherent laser recording beams (RBs) of the same polarization. The process is controlled by monitoring the diffraction efficiency (DE) of the PG by a probe laser beam (PB). We studied the dynamics of PG formation in the presence of an assisting laser beam (AB) of different polarizations and intensities at different combinations of polarization of the RBs and PB [1]. We found that the recording by polarization modulation is not affected by the polarization of AB, whereas the recording by intensity modulation exhibits a strong dependence on the AB polarization. The case of photoassisted increase and decrease of DE for PGs recorded with intensity modulation under s and p polarizations of the AB is shown in Figure 1. The obtained experimental results can be explained by the two complimentary mechanisms: orientational hole burning, as a result of photoselective isomerization, and orientational redistribution of the DR1 chromophores [2]. The presented approach on fine phototuning of the photoinduced refractive index modulation of estimated amplitudes from 0.001 RIU to 0.004 RIU may open a new avenue for applications in all-optical signal processing [3, 4].
