Rezumat

A group of the vast family of Mn/Ln clusters is the Mn/Ce heterometallic coordination compounds. These complexes were found to be of great interest for various reasons. Mixed Mn/Ce compounds have been extensively used as catalyst in homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis of water oxidation to molecular dioxygen. They find wide use in organic chemistry as oxidizing agents for a large variety of organic substrates. Many Mn/Ce compounds posses unusual magnetic properties and can function as nanoscale magnets [1]. In efforts to construct heterometallic Mn-Ce cluster, our attention focused on using pre-organized complex [Mn6O2(piv)10(Py)2(Hpiv)1,5] (Hpiv= pivalic acid) with the intention of forming clusters with (NH4)2Ce(NO3)6 and 2-(hydroxymethyl)pyridine (hmp). The synthesized complexes can be described by the following formulas [Mn2Ce2(hmp)6(NO3)4(piv)2] (1) and [Mn8CeO8(piv)12(DMF)4] (2). Complexes were analyzed by X-ray crystallography and IR spectroscopy. Cluster 1 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c. The manganese and cerium ions of the cuboid-like [Mn2Ce2] core are bridged by six moieties of 2-(hydroxymethyl)pyridine, two moieties of pivalic acid and four chelating NO3- groups. The CeIII and MnIII atoms are ten and six coordinated, respectively. Cluster 2 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P-1 and comprises one CeIV ion and eight MnIII ions. Ligation around the [Mn8CeO8]12+ core is provided by eight doubly- and four triply-bridging pivalate groups. There are also four DMF terminal ligands on Mn atoms. The Ce atom is eight-coordinated and all the Mn atoms are six-coordinated.
