Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) also known as porous coordination polymers are a family of compounds that attract interest as potential materials for gas storage and separation, drug delivery, sensing and catalysis. [1-3] The hydrothermal reaction of manganese(II) nitrate with pyridine-2,5-dicarboxylic acid in the presence of 1,4-bis((1H-imidazoyl-1-yl)methyl)benzene produced a coordination polymer. Pyridine-2,5-dicarboxylic acid units bridge the manganese(II) centers to create a 2-D network. The 1,4-bis((1H-imidazoyl-1-yl)methyl)benzene group is the bridging unit between the 2-D layers. A similar hydrothermal reaction using cobalt(II) nitrate produced a bi-nuclear coordination polymer. Scheme of synthesis and the topology of interpenetrated cobalt MOF (left), partial space filling diagrams for manganese MOF showing the undulating “W” motif, and the manganese 2-D layers linked by BIB ligands (right). Sorption properties of the cobalt and manganese compounds have been investigated. Their surface areas (S BET) are 32 m2 g-1 and 8.7 m2 g-1, respectively. Unfortunately, as a porous material for binding substrates these compounds appear to be poor candidates. |
