One of the essential disadvantages of thiosemicabazones reagents is their weak solubility in water. This problem can be solved through functionalization of the ligands with ionizable groups. Our work was focused to the studies of formation of coordinative compounds of 5-(methylenetrimethylamonium)salicylaldehyde thiosemicarbazone with copper(II) ions: Investigated thiosemicarbazone has an ionic structure, is water soluble, forming stable solutions over time. In acidic water solution are colorless and are spectral characterized by maximum absorption at wavelength of 300 and 327 nm. In alkaline medium the color of solution turns yellow with an absorption maximum at 370 nm. The color change of the pH variation can be attributed to the reagent dissociation. The presence of the copper(II) changes the color of the reagent solutions at pH 4,7–5,9. This coordination compounds has an yellow-green color which can be indentified in the electronic spectra of absorption at the maximum of λ=375 nm. Formed compounds are stable in time keeping the same value of the absorption during of four hour. The composition of the obtained complex compound with copper(II) ions was determined by the method of continuous variations and molar ratios. Molar ratio of Ligand:Cu was determinated to be 1:1. Molar absorptivity value was equal to 10050 mol-1·L·cm-1. The complex stability was estabeished by Komari method and is characterized by value of lgK=7,69. The calibration curve remains linear in the concentration range (0,60 – 8,4)·10-5mol/L. This reagent can be recommended for spectrophotometric determination of micro quantities of copper.
