Over the history different factors alimented the diversity of current democratic societies and pluralism became a normative tool to accommodate the difference. These state of art brought several challenges to the democratic societies. From one side, the modern societies witnessed a decrease in religiosity of their own mates but from the other side there were an emergence of some new religions. This paradox made many democratic states reflect on the role of religion. Should it be a public issues or left it to the private matter? That was and still is the question at stake. Additionally, there are some conceptual challenges that is open, such as a commonly agreed definition of religious minority. On top of it the emerging religious fundamentalism of some religion put additional pressure on democratic states. Thus, this article analyses the challenges of religious pluralism in the democratic societies and questions to what extent the existing setting can be reasonable. It concludes that religious pluralism is a reality and needs recognition and accommodation. |
