One of the first and at the same time the largest and most valuable collection of documents on the signatories of the Declaration of the Unification of Bessarabia with Romania was transferred to the National Museum of the History of Moldova from the archives of the former KGB in 1994. This is about 69 documents and photographs related to the materials of the criminal prosecution of members of Sfatului Ţării (Country Council), arrested by Soviet authorities in the summer of 1940. Among the arrested were lawyer Vladimir Bodescu, priest Alexandru Baltaga who represented the Bessarabian clergy in Sfatului Ţării, Emanoil Catelli, one of the initiators of the creation of Sfatului Ţării, Teodosie Cojocaru, one of the military leaders of Sfatului Ţării, Professor Teodor Neaga, Pantelimon Sinadino, representative of the Greek minority in Sfatului Ţării. Among those arrested also were Ion Ignatiuc, Grigore Turcuman, Ion Codreanu, Nicolae Secară, Teodor Uncu, Constantin Bivol, Ştefan Botnariuc and Luca Ştirbeţ. 14 persons in total. The fact that these people were arrested in the early days of the Soviet occupation (the order on the arrest of Grigore Turcuman was signed on July 2, 1940) indicates the beginning of mass extermination of the Bessarabian intelligentsia, those who did not manage to flee across the Prut. Those who were arrested were accused that on March 27, 1918 they voted to unite Bessarabia with Romania, and that later they would conduct anti-Soviet activities. The investigation into the cases of the accused was terminated in May 1941. However, the trial did not take place because of the beginning of the war, and the defendants, with the exception of Teodosie Cojocaru, who died in the Chişinău prison, were sent to the Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, to prisons in Penza, Chistopol and Kazan. None of the members of Sfatului Ţării arrested by the Soviet authorities in 1940 (except Ion Codreanu) survived the Red Terror. During the arrests, not only the former deputies’ property, but also identity cards, photographs, documents on education, awards and personal belongings were confiscated. For five decades, all this was stored in the archives of the former KGB as “evidence materials”, and then, at our request and at the request of the then Ministry of Culture and Cults, were transferred by the Ministry of National Security of the Republic of Moldova to the National Museum of History of Moldova for research and display. A lot of materials (documents, photos, awards) were given to the museum from the personal archives of Emanoil Catelli, Alexandru Baltaga, Ion Ignatiuc, Teodor Neaga and Pantelimon Sinadino. Among the items confiscated from Emanoil Catelli, there are family photos, certificates of graduation from the Cucuruzeni Agricultural School and the Novorossiysk University, the mandate of the Director General for Agriculture in the Government of the Moldavian Democratic Republic, the royal decrees for awarding the Order of the Crown of Romania and the Order of the Star of Romania, the Ferdinand I Medal and the Reward for Labor (Răsplata muncii) Medal, a Diploma of Gratitude from the Mărăşesti Society. Of particular value are two postcards and a letter sent by Parascovia Catelli to her husband at the address of the NKVD in Chisinau on 7 March 1941. In the collection there are also several photographs, an identity card, a permit to possess weapons, a certificate of registration in the Population Bureau, a voter’s card – all in the name of Alexandru Baltaga, a postcard and a letter addressed to the parents by Vsevolod Baltaga, the Alexandru Baltaga’s son, a notebook and a certificate of registration in the Population Bureau that belonged to former deputy of Sfatului Ţării Ion Ignatiuc. Among the documents obtained there are the military card of Teodor Uncu, the personal file of Captain Teodosie Cojocaru, the photograph and identity card of Pantelimon Sinadino, various documents on land ownership in the name of Constantin Bivol, and so on. The collection, which entered the museum, also includes the calendar “Heroic Romania” for 1940, the memorandum of the Bessarabian People’s League, the newspaper “Bessarabian Life” (Viaţa Basarabiei) of March 15, 1924 and an excerpt from the newspaper “Bessarabian Life” with the article “Iron yoke”, a brochure “On Holy Communion” translated from Russian by Gurie, Metropolitan of Bessarabia. Three photos from the criminal investigation file depict former deputies Teodor Neaga, Grigore Turcuman and Nicolae Secară during the KGB arrest. The sufferings through which these and other accused faced from the moment of detention to the time of being sent to places of detention in the territory of the Tatar ASSR are also evidenced by copies of procedural materials - interrogation records, orders for detention, orders and explanations of security agencies regarding searches, detentions and interrogations the ex-deputies were subjected. |
