Juglone is a member of naphthoquinones possessing allelopathic properties. Due to its toxic effects, planting trees around walnuts may be risky. Juglone has been shown to inhibit a broad spectrum of microorganisms including bacteria, algae and fungi. Juglone is also known with its anti-tumor activities. Based on these properties juglone can be used in the fields of medicine, farming and aquaculture. Cyclodextrins - family of compounds made up of glucose molecules bound together in a ring. It is known as a host molecule in complexation. Cyclodextrins have a truncated cone shape. Outer molecule surface is hydrophilic and the inner - hydrophobic. Alginate is an anionic polysaccharide distributed widely in the cell walls of brown algae. It forms viscous gel structure with water. Formation of a binary system or/and complexation of juglone with beta cyclodextrin and alginate has many benefits such as increase in solubility, increase in bioavailability, decrease in irritation etc. which finally empowers the effect of juglone and it speeds up the treatment. |
