This paper briefly describes the origins and the evolution of national cyber security strategies, providing the examples of some European countries experiences as well as focusing on the supra-state cyber policies developed by NATO and the European Union. In its second part, it explores the lessons learned and the areas and issues to be tackled for a potential national cyber security strategy for the Republic of Moldova. It argues that the legal framework, the share of the SMEs in the national economy, their security poverty line and security awareness and education in the cyber security sector are mandatory assets for such a strategy.
