The achievements of Romanian parasitology have been outstanding over time, being imposed by world-class researchers like V. Babeş, C. Starcovici, C. Motaş, Al. Ciucă, P. Riegler, A. Locusteanu, I. Ciurea. Founded in 1962, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Timisoara, through the discipline of Parasitic Diseases, was involved in the research of parasitosis in animals through the leaders who went through in different periouds of time: Conf. dr. Eugen Simionescu, Prof. dr. Iustin Cosoroabă and Prof. dr. Gheorghe Dărăbuş. As the first head of this discipline, having a multilateral biological culture, obtained through the graduation of two faculties, professor Eugen Simionescu, was concerned with the organization and endowment of the discipline. He has published numerous scientific papers in the country and abroad. One of these researches focused on the study of anticoccidial products, obtaining an innovation certificate for the product “Coccidizin “. The destinies of parasitology in Timisoara were conducted over 25 years by Professor dr. Iustin Cosoroabă. He has published nearly 200 scientific papers addressing issues such as: Control of hypodermosis, resistance and pseudo resistance to anthelmintics and Insecticides. One of the reference books for Romanian parasitology, and beyond, is the veterinary parasitology reference book - Acarioze-Entomoze, which focuses on a life-long scientific experience, gathering the appreciation of Romanian and foreign parasitologists. The School of Parasitology form Timisoara has strengthened its research infrastructure through the contribution of Prof. Dr. Gheorghe Dărăbuş, together with the PhD students and the team within the discipline. This allowed the development of a research theme to: test the therapeutic efficacy of some acaricides and insecticides; development of hydatidosis control programs; resistance and pseudo-resistance to benzimidazole of some helminth populations; development of therapeutic models in helminthosis; determination of biological, epidemiological, pathogenic, diagnostic and therapeutic aspects in natural and experimental cryptosporidosis (with the first report International symposium, 13 October 2017 37 of Cryptosporidium meleagridis in Romania, cryptosporidiosis in swine and existence of “periparturient rise” in cattle cryptosporidosis); the use of methane fermentation in the parasite decontamination of semi-liquid dejections; quantification of diagnostic methods and therapeutic protocols in dermatophytes of carnivores. Molecular epidemiology studies in cryptosporidiosis, giardiasis and canine babesiosis have made possible the identification of different species/genotypes in Romania. In cryptosporidiosis, in calves the species C. parvum (Subtype 11aA15G2R1, Subtype 11aA16G1R1) and C. bovis were identified while in lambs C. parvum (Subtype IIaA17G1R1, Subtype IIaA16G1R1, Subtype IIdA20G1, Subtype IIdA24G1, Subtype IIdA22G2R1), C. ubiquitum (previously known as C. ovine subtype), C. xiaoi (previously known as C. bovis-like subtype) were the main species. In humans C. parvum and C. ovine genotype was found. It has been established that in western Romania canine babesiosis is determined by the species: B gibsoni and B. canis. Giardia intestinalis has been identified in several animal species, with the assemblages E and D being isolated in sheep, the latter having zoonotic potential. The research activity has also materialized in patents: „Antifungal ointment of aqueous extract of Allium sativum stabilized used in dermatomycosis treatment” (2012); “Plant supplement for the prevention and control of bee nosemosis” (2014); “Gel for the treatment of dry canine demodycosis lesions” (2016) that received several diplomas, awards, medals at national and international invention salons. Collaboration with parasitologists from Moldova, respectively with the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and The Institute of Zoology of Academy of Sciences of Moldova has always been beneficial to both parts. Among the well-known reputable Moldovan specialists, whose experience and work we have called, academics Alexei Spassky and Eugen Zgardan are notorious. |
