The progress in Romanian parasitological research was worldwide first highlighted by the discovery of Babesia species and pathological aspects (scientist V. Babeş, professors C. Starcovici, C. Motaş and Al. Ciucă), the studies focused on equine trypanosomiasis (Al. Ciucă, P.Riegler, C. Motaş and A. Locusteanu) and by studies upon helminthiases in pisces fauna (I.Ciurea). In 1962, with the foundation of Veterinary Medicine Faculty at the Agronomic Institute in Cluj, new opportunities were created in the field of animal parasitological diseases research. The first studies were conducted by Nicolae Vartic (born in Basarabia) and Eronim Șuteu, who brought their approach to major parasitosis in animals and were focused on establishing diagnostic methods, antiparasitic therapeutic and prophylactic action. Nicolae Vartic and collegues tested the value of complement fixation test (CFT) in hydatidosis and fasciolosis; they reported the presence of positive serological reactions in sheeps with babesiosis, regarding Leptospira; they established the implication of Eimeria species in the development of encephalomalacia in chickens. In more recent studies, Eronim Şuteu and Vasile Cozma, contributed in deepened studies upon diagnostic methods and pathology of Giardia and Cryptosporidium infection in different animal species; they determined ultramicroscopic modifications in globidian abomasitis in sheep, in muscular sarcocystosis and experimental infection with Eimeria spp. in lambs; they discovered the biological cycle of Hammondia heydorni in dogs through consumption of goat meat and they succeeded infecting cats with Hammondia hammondi through consumption of organs (brain) and muscle from goats; they infected cats with Cystoisospora felis and dogs with Isospora bigemina, identical with H. heydorni, through goat meat and organs; they first reported worldwide an experiment regarding the anti-trichophytic actions of benzimidazole derivates in calves and they managed to develop an original product - Femicozin- with high efficacy in trichophytosis. Through the history of 55 years of Veterinary Medicine Faculty from Cluj-Napoca, there were numerous important collaborations with the Parasitology School of academician Alexei Spassky (honorary member of Parasitology Association of Romania), from the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, Institute of Zoology and also, International symposium, 13 October 2017 35 with Parasitology School of academician Eugen Zgardan (distinguished with the medal “Pentru progresul medicinei veterinare romaneşti”), from State Agrarian University of Moldova.
