Rezumat

The present paper focuses on the role of proverbs and sayings in discovering a culture’s worldview in the EFL classroom as a way of promoting global learning and cultural diversity. The appropriate use of them reflects our depth of knowledge and the ability to integrate the wisdom of a nation in the target language.  Being considered as authentic elements of language that best encapsulates society's values and beliefs, proverbs and sayings help us discover the invisible part of the iceberg model of culture and better understand people’s worldview. Therefore, incorporating proverbs and sayings in the EFL classroom through different interaction techniques raises cross-cultural awareness, builds 21st century skills and enhances EFL learning. It promotes cultural diversity and helps educators bring global learning in their classroom. Moreover, it helps teachers consolidate a multicultural/multi-language classroom and develop cross-cultural communicative competence.  Thus, the article aims at understanding the concepts of proverbs and sayings, which offer insights into a culture’s worldview, by identifying similarities and differences between them and suggesting application ways of successful integration into the lesson.  The research shares author’s view, personal educational experience in discovering worldview through proverbs and sayings, and offers guidelines on using authentic materials in the classroom in the most effective way.
