Rezumat

In this article we propose to deal with the problem of linguistic gaps/lacunas of socio-cultural origin based on the translation into French of the literary work of M.F. Akhundov, philosopher, writer, Azerbaijani playwright of the nineteenth century. First of all, we present a general presentation of the notion of linguistic gap and different approaches to this notion, after which we turn to the study of concrete words and expressions taken from the literary work mentioned above. It is the words belonging to theAzerbaijani language and culture that serve as an example to lucidly explain the phenomenon of linguistic and extra-linguistic interconnection during the translating act. It has always been difficult or sometimes impossible to convey the meaning of a wordin the target language where translators used different strategies. In addition, the requirements for translation have not been the same during different periods of evolution of different cultures. Translation is not a matter of correspondence between thewords of the source language and the target language, as K.Dejean Le Feal says, it is a matter of equivalence of meaning, stylistic effect and finality between the original text and its translation. So, we will also present a study on the strategy of the comedy translator mentioned above to find the answer to the question -is cross-cultural communication achieved?
