Rezumat | |||||
Two novels written and published in the year 2000, Fata din casa vagon [The Girl in the Wagon House] by Ana Maria Sandu (2006) and Unterstadt by Ivana Šojat-Kuči (2009), one in Romania, the other in Croatia, tackle the serious theme of family history influenced directly or indirectly by the “greater” history, which brings social and political changes (in Unterstadt, both world wars, and in the Fata din casa vagon, the communist regime). The two novels have a few common points: first person narration, narrator or narrator character, preoccupation with family life, and especially with the lives of women in the family, their relationships with husbands and children. These mothers, aunts, grandmothers, grandgrandmothers by their choices – to marry, to give birth, to linger – define the lives of their offspring. Narrators, however, are very different: Ina from the Fata din casa vagon is apparently an omniscient narrator, or at least very well informed about his mother and grandmother, not only factually, but also intimately, while Katarina from Unterstadt has to seek and reconstitute both facts and emotions. Family history is a place where both novels seek to solve the inherited trauma from mothers and grandmothers, but the healing process is also difficult, sometimes even brutal. |
