Norms as well as the social order established in an archaic and coercive society, such as the Sicilian one, must be strictly followed, even if they prevent the human being from living his own life unconditionally. The daily banality of the bourgeoisie life gives birth to a new “tragedy”, adultery - almost always feminine - which jeopardizes the very core of the society, the family institution. Pirandello highlights the ego of a person, along with the conflicts that burst from the contrast between shape and essence, between “to be “and “to look”, between human nature and society. Both, imposing or self-imposing a role that must be played in the theatre of social life determine the Pirandellian character either to accept the social norms or to find a way to avoid them as well as to remain within the framework of the rules of the society. This is the case of Leone Gala, a philosophic character, that appears in the play Il giuoco delle parti. Leone Gala, in the absence of conjugal love, becomes immune to both pain and joy. He figures up the so called “game of life” but at the same time he accepts its compromise, and tries to obey its rules. |
