Albert Camus shares with Jean-Paul Sartre a vision of the human condition that implies a fracture between the irrational character of the universe and the human conscience, fracture whose acknowledgement is marked by the sentiment of the absurd. The absurd does not lie in the univers itself, nor inside the human being, it is the product of their coexistence.  The essai Le Mythe de Sisyphe, the novel L’Étranger and the plays Caligula and Le Malentendu, which form « the cycle of the absurd» are, all of them, dealing with the same problem. Despite their diversity, the revelation of the absurd and the moment when the human being is rebelling against it (for the acknowledgement of the absurd is usually associated, in Camus’s writings, with the feeling of a metaphysical revolt) correspond, in these writings, to the same profound inclinations of the human sensitivity rising to the defence of the human values. Therefore, the fundamental problem, for Camus, lies in whether to accept or not this coexistence towards which the human being has the status of a « stranger ».  For Camus, as opposed to Sartre, « the essence precedes the existence ». This means that the human value is set as preexistent to the confrontation with the contingency of an irrational universe.
