Teza

After graduating from Kishinev vocational-technical school, architect Mikhail Konstantinovich Chekerul-Kush (1865-1917) received his higher education at the Technological Institute in Kharkov. He started his own career, working as an assistant to the architect of Kishinev, where he founded a special construction office. Then, for many years, he took up his post as Kishinev city architect. Mikhail Chekerul-Kush participated in the construction of both important highways and public and private buildings, which were built in Kishinev, including the city bank. In 1903, Kishinev city department announced a competition for making the outline sketches for the construction of a modern banking building, which was won by the young engineer Mikhail Chekerul-Kush. In the beginning of the 20th century, the city bank was built and resolved in a classical style with some elements of romanticism according to his design. It became one of the most beautiful buildings in the city. The main and lateral facades of the bank building were decorated by four porticoes of the Corinthian order and domed with the sculptures of a few goddesses. As a unified image with strict proportions, the main front of this bank was adorned with a sculpture of the Roman god Mercury as the symbol of wealth and prosperity along with a few figures of chimeras. The building was built between 1905 and 1912, with some interruptions in the construction during1906-1908 due to financial difficulties. Archival documents confirm that two famous architects from Odessa, Alexander Bernardazzi and Henry Lonsky, were invited as experienced experts for the construction of this bank. The public bank (now the Organ hall) is an architectural monument  that is protected by the state. In 2017-2018, within the framework of the European project of preservation of architectural monuments, the building was reconstructed with a cardinal change to the main colors of the facade without the restoration of the sculptures on the top.
