Despite of strict requirements for development of drug remedies imposed by regulatory agencies, the cases of drug-indused liver injury are one of the public health issues. Drug-indused liver pathology is a challenge for specialists in the assassment of patients not only due to its potential severity but also due to the incapacity to make the final diagnosis in the majority of cases. Acute drug-indused liver injury have a probability of approximately 10% evolution to severe, or even fulminant or chronic forms. A study of the special literature from the MEDLINE database, using the PubMed search engine, was conducted. Drugs or, more commonly, their metabolites affect liver function either directly or by triggering an autoimmune response. Currently, the most commonly used serum biomarkers to detect and monitor acute and chronic liver injury are alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase and total bilirubin. Efforts are now being made to identify new biomarkers with high sensibility and high specificity of liver injury of drug origin. Proposed biomarkers include serum markers: sorbitol dehydrogenase, glutathione s-transferase, glutamate dehydrogenase. To improve the diagnosis and prognosis of drug-indused liver injury, it is necessary to continue the research in order to confirm the importance of new biomarkers |
