In recent decades, the number of patients with primary hepatocellular liver cancer (HCC) has increased worldwide, especially in patients with risk factors, including metabolic syndrome (MS). Between the main components of the metabolic syndrome, such as obesity, type II diabetes, steatosis/steatohepatitis and the emergence of hepatocellular carcinoma exist a direct relationship. Simultaneous presence of 2 MS components increases the frequency of development of HCC in 6 times. The main pathogenetic links of HCC development in MS are chronic persistent inflammation, intestinal microbiota, and deregulation of lipid metabolism with steatosis/steatohepatitis, oxidative stress, obesity and type II diabetes with hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance. Prevention of HCC in patients with metabolic syndrome include fight against obesity, treatment of type II diabetes, steatosis/ steatohepatitis, smoking cessation, stopping alcohol abuse, rational nutrition and physical exercise. |
