Objects, made of glass, are known in northern Mesopotamia in the 3rd mil BC, whereas early glass-like products, frit or early faience can be traced back to the 5th mil BC in different regions, e.g. Mesopotamia, the Levant and in the Caucasus. Especially these early, glass-like products such as pearls or tiny figurines show a wide variety of components and do not indicate standardized recipes. Glass-like objects and faience are well known from Majkop contexts, whereas the application of these terms is missing in the Cucuteni-Tripolye-sphere. There, the raw material of certain beads from graves or hoards is described as “coral”, “limestone” or even as glass-like, blackish material. In respect to the possible coloring of weathered frit or faience beads it must alternatively be considered, whether some of these grave goods might be identified as frit or faience. Epistemologically, the production of such glass-like objects is very strongly linked to the technologies which were applied in ceramic and metal production. Following a cross-crafting approach, it shall be scrutinized, in how far such early glass-like objects, frit or faience, could have been produced as well in the northern Pontic region. |
