Teza

During the period 2014–2015, researchers from the “Roma Ethnology” Group of the Institute of Cultural Heritage have implemented the Pilot Project “Safeguarding of the intangible Romani heritage in the Republic of Moldova threatened by the volatilisation of the individual unexplored collections” through the Endangered Archives Programme supported by Arcadia Charitable Fund. The main aim of the project was to discover, digitize, list and preserve the existing collections of the archive materials, which are connected with the ethnocultural heritage of the Moldovan Roma. At the beginning of XX century, the Moldovan Roma community had lived under typical social conditions of a pre-industrial period and currently a large part still lives this way. Unfortunately, the social exclusion plight and the traditional way of life of the Roma, prone to permanent resettlement, is threatening to lose the personal archives, which were established over many generations. This is the reason why these archives gradually disappear if not being systematized and digitized. From the beginning of 2017, the digitized and listed material is publicly available in the Moldovan National Archive, as well as in the British Library, becoming an invaluable scientific resource for Humanitarian and Art scholars specialized in Romani studies. The project research teams have digitized 2557 images (38 GB) from 36 individual collections on eight Roma ethnographic groups, which are deployed in 16 localities from the Republic of Moldova, dating from 1925 to 2013. In the presentation, I will highlight the most valuable historical Romani artefacts discovered in the Republic of Moldova, which were divided in the following files: Photographs, Roma Family Album, Roma Military Album, Roma Youthfulness Album, Roma Wedding Album, Papers, Identity Card.
