Rezumat

The controversial nature of opinions on the issue of the arbitrary / non-arbitrary character of the glotic sign is explained in this article. It is much easier to “discover” and track the history of the name of a concrete object than the history of the emergence and development of the name of abstract phenomena and notions. It happens because it is easier to work with the naming of objects in order to establish the “motivation” of the glotic sign. Thus, in our opinion, the persistent controversy in scientific studies, even in the general linguistics textbooks, is explained by the fact that the notion of arbitrary sign is confused with the notion of demotivated sign, which is non-motivated for current speakers, but which was not arbitrary, it was often motivated when the language unit were created.
