One thing we like about the English language is its readiness to create and accept new terms, its flexibility to keep combining words and challenging traditional grammar. Language is in continuous change which makes its usage difficult to deal with. Terminology is a science which aims are to study the terms. Terms are lexical elements used in specialized fields (subjects or their branches) and generated in such fields or modified from elements already existing in other fields. Terminology allows the compilation, description and presentation of terms. The translation of terminology is a kind of speech event. Terminology has some aspects in common with Lexicography, although the differences between the nature of the lexical objects studied caused the development of Terminology’s own theories on the lexical elements of a language and Terminology’s own methodology based on such theories. This allows considering Terminology as a science separated from Lexicography. The translation of special terms is an unavoidable problem. In the present article, we concentrate on issues in lexical representation. We describe methodology, then we are going to discover the dimensions along which similar words can be differentiated. Source language and target language texts differ formally due to a number of reasons of both objective and subjective character. Objective reasons are caused by the divergence in the language systems and speech models. Subjective reasons can be attributed to the speaker’s choice of a language form. Thus, systemic dissimilarity of forms takes place when one of the languages lacks some grammar category and, therefore, has no corresponding form. |
