Translation of oral or written discourse is a strategic game that aims to render the content of a message in source language using means available in target language making sure that the effect on the receiver of translation is the same or almost the same that the original was meant to have on the audience of source language speakers. The study of translation may be product, process, participant and context oriented. The article is dedicated to descriptive product oriented study of translation of both written and oral discourse. We speak of the use of critical discourse analysis and corpus linguistics methods and techniques to research the product of written and oral discourse translation, paying special attention to corpus as research instrument for product oriented study of oral and written discourse translation, its definition in the context of linguistics and some points researchers might wish to consider while building their own corpus as there are very few translation corpora that are publicly available. We discuss the opportunities offered by critical discourse analysis and corpus linguistics as well as some of the pitfalls of product oriented descriptive study of translation. |
