The study aims to capitalize documents unknown to current historiography, drawn up by the American secret services between 1949 and 1954 on the `repatriation` of Romanian citizens born in Bessarabia, Northern Bucovina and the Herţa region Ŕ territories ceded by the Romanian state to the Soviet Union following the June 1940 ultimatum Ŕ who had fled the Red Army into Romania, either after the ultimatum or during the Second World War. The official US reports indicate the pressures that the Romanian Communist State, obedient to Moscow's requests, is putting onto its own citizens Ŕ referencing those born in the indicated provinces - in order to obtain their acceptance for returning to their native regions (after 1944, part of the Soviet Union), without complying with international laws in force that defended freedom of choice. Thus, the `repatriations` increasingly resembled `deportations`.
