Diabetes mellitus affects a lot of people all over the world. The quality of life of these patients is compromised and the mortality is furthermore influenced by the disease. Cardiovascular disease constitutes the major cause of mortality and morbidity in both type 1 (T1D) and type 2 (T2D) diabetes patients. A complex approach of diabetic patients is imperative and multifactorial treatment is imperative for morbidity and mortality reduction. A lot of studies have shown high prevalence of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency at diabetic patients, in 40-70% of type 1 diabetes and 50% in type 2 diabetes. Pancreatic exocrine insufficiency defined as an inadequate pancreatic enzyme activity to digest food generally due to either insufficient enzyme production, insufficient enzyme activation, or to early enzyme degradation. Each of these physiopathologic mechanisms can be implied in the appearance of PEI in diabetic patients. Manifestations of PEI, maldigestion and malabsorbtion outcomes affect the quality of life and aggravate the prognosis of disease. A straight correlation between cardiovascular risk and hyperhomocysteinemia in type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus is established by recent researches. PEI, along with celiac disease is one of the main causes of hyperhomocysteinemia in these diabetic patients |
