Mercury is a toxic substance that directly affects the nervous, renal and cardiovascular system. The burden of chronic and acute poisoning caused by mercury varies from country to country. The main factor that determines the burden of population exposure to mercury is amount of mercury emissions from anthropogenic sources. Moldova Hg emissions have been assessed under the GEF/UNEP “The initial assessment on the implementation of Minamata Convention on mercury in Moldova” by which was determined amount of approx. 944 kg of Hg emissions across territories including the Transnistria. Unfortunately the concentration of mercury in the environment elements and marine products especially imported fi sh in our country is less monitored. Although, 45% of Hg deposits is from border provenance, also majority quantity of imported fi sh comes from countries where was detected increased concentrations of mercury, more than 0,3 ppm. So the problem of exposure to mercury among Moldovan population still is opened for studying. |
