Rezumat | |||||
Metabolic syndrome is a complex of metabolic, hormonal and clinical disorders, which represents risk factors for cardiovascular pathology. Insulin resistance and visceral obesity are key components of metabolic syndrome. Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) is a particular form of visceral adipose tissue, depositing around the heart and is found in certain quantities around subepicardial coronary arteries. EAT is a metabolically active organ, secreting many biologically active substances –adipokines, by means of which, through paracrine and autocrine mechanisms, affects many processes in the body.Visualization and quantification of EAT is possible with help of echocardiography, computed tomography and nuclear magnetic resonance. EAT has been proposed as a marker of visceral obesity and therapeutic marker in patients undergoing weight loss treatment, as well as a marker for the assessment of the additional risk in patients with metabolic syndrome, coronary heart disease, atrial fi brillation and others. Further in-depth study of EAT functions may open up additional prospects in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cardiovascular diseases, accompanied by high cardiometabolic risk |
