Background: Infant mortality is considered one of the most sensitive indicators of socio-economic status of the society, population health, and efficiency of healthcare. Studies based on statistical calculations showed that 46% of of infant mortality causes are avoidable and its level can be reduced to 4,5-6 per 1,000 live births. Aim of the study: to analyze indicators and causes of infant mortality and in children under-5 years age in Moldova. Materials and methods: the data was collected from the Medical Statistical Yearbook „Public Health in Moldova”. The study design included also the assessment of parents’ knowledge on a sample of 484 caregivers of children aged from 0 to 18 months. Results: Beginning with year 1990 till 2014 infant and under-fi ve mortality rates had been continuously decreasing (up to 9,6 ‰ and 11,6 ‰ respectively in 2014). Causative structure of infant and under-fi ve mortality in the republic during last years shows complications of the perinatal period as leading cause, followed by congenital malformations, respiratory system diseases, trauma, poisoning and infectious diseases. Noticeably, still persists a high percentage of deaths from respiratory illnesses, trauma and injuries, given that, in developed countries, deaths in this category are considered to be preventable. Also, a high rate of deaths at home among infants is registered. Conclusions: therefore, taking into consideration higher levels of infant mortality and in children under 5 years in comparison with majority of developed countries, and also a high rate of deaths from diseases considered to be avoidable (respiratory diseases, infectious diseases, trauma and poisoning) decrease of infant mortality and in children under 5 years remains a priority goal for Moldova and activities aimed to improve the current situation are required. |
