Interrelations between Mast Cells and Microvessel Density in Neoplastic Lesions of the Uterine Cervix
This study examined targeted biopsies of the uterine cervix and specimens taken from cold knife conisation in patients with macroscopically
detectable lesions. Lesions were stratified as follows: CIN1 (n=17), CIN2 (n=11), CIN3 (n=7), microinvasive carcinoma (n=10) and invasive
carcinoma (n=49). Normal uterine cervix samples taken from conisation specimens were used as control (n=5). We applied a double stain method
for mast cells and vessels identification. Vessels were revealed with a CD34 antibody QBEnd 10 clone, and mast cells with a tryptase antibody,
A1 clone. We noticed a higher number of mast cells, which are disposed in small groups or isolated around tumoral cells and blood vessels, in
microinvasive carcinomas than in the normal cervix. In invasive carcinomas we found high number of vessels with variable morphology.
