Belgian writers, poets, novelists or playwrights, have always been preoccupied with the relation between text and image. They were not the only ones to do so: a painter like René Magritte has also written a great amount of theoretical texts, collected in one volume (Ecrits complets) in which he explains his artistic approach and his constant preoccupation with art and representation. From the rich correspondence with other members of Belgian and French surrealism mouvement to the texts of many of his interviews and conferences, these documents stand for as many proofs of an exemplary itinerary, where the « problems » of the representation offered to the artist in order to be solved are being given the solution, that efficient one: the painting, as an object that provokes and invites the viewer to reflect about his eternal human condition. If “the essential act of thinking”, according to Magritte, consists in “resembling the things”, the act of painting (the images of thought) will make visible this resemblance. The aim of the act of painting, according to Magritte, is to make the act of thinking visible. |
