The elements of many national coats of arms depict the national historic past of the country, and are unanimously recognized by all citizens. Such lofty symbols are established not only by laws and decrees. They are at the same time the quintessence of citizens’ ideals and aspirations. But, passed on from generation to generation, they especially reflect, in the countries with old traditions, legendary symbols of their historical beginnings. Many indigenous and foreign chroniclers and writers have written about Moldova’s coat of arms. The first written record on the Moldavian coats of arms inspired by legends can be found in the first book on the history of our country entitled The chronicle of the Moldavian country by Grigore Ureche, written in Romanian. In old books that were published in Moldavia there were also “verses for the praise and exaltation of the arms”, as it was usual to say in the old Romanian language. We can say with certainty, that the first documentary sources that have reached us in which it was mentioned, or better say its image was published, was Cartea românească de învăţătură Dumenecele preste an şi la praznice împărăteşi – Romanian book of doctrines on Sundays throughout the year and on Great Feasts – a reliable historical source, written in 1643 by Metropolitan Varlaam, and printed in Iasi during the reign of Vasile Lupu. |
