The ancient culture, especially philosophy and literature, played an excellent historical role, and influenced, to varying degrees, the intellectuals in many countries of Europe, Asia and Africa for about fifteen centuries. The intensity with which this culture was assimilated became an indicator of the level of development and spiritual growth of each nation. The Greek culture continues to be attractive in particular because of the Greeks’ eagerness to understand the objective nature of things, without the addition of their subjective nature. The National Library of the Republic of Moldova holds two editions of the book «History of Herodotus» translated by Pierre du-Ryer, a famous translator, who is especially well-known for his Greek and Latin translations of the works of Livy, Polibiu, Cicero etc.
