Rezumat

The fact that the traditional system of library activities is in crisis is obvious and often discussed. Users’ increasingly diversified demands, the inability to maintain a permanent and effective control of the mass of information and documents are the reasons of an increasingly less efficiency of the traditional services. And that is happening when the role of libraries in society should become fundamental. A library should be the first institution through which a society maintains contact with its own reserve of knowledge, while controlling it. Contradictory Internet resources, which are so often addressed, can disappear at any moment, besides the quality of information on some sites is doubtful. That is why libraries are the institutions that should have institutional responsibility for preserving information in time, and for its authenticity. Both the modification and the upgrading of the traditional services, and the creation and implementation of new services, are logical ways of adapting the National Library of the Republic of Moldova to the changes imposed by the pressure of the information market. For, the fact that the informational and cultural needs of the users the library tends to satisfy are becoming more pressing, cannot be denied. Simultaneously, the requirements for the quality of the services provided by libraries are increasing too. Under the present circumstances, an urgent and instant products updating and upgrading would be a natural reaction of the library institution.
