Pulse oximetry is a continuous non-invasive method for monitoring the level of oxygen saturation in arterial blood. Methods: There was performed a cohort analysis of neonatal data collected on all births in the Departments of physiology and observation from the Mother and Child Institute using pre- and post- ductal oximetry in the first day – 6 to 24 hour after birth over a period of 10 month. • Newborns - 267 (10.2%) who had SaO2 <95% after the first test were tested repeatedly over an hour. • Of these only 48 (18 %) had positive results of the repeated test which correlates with studies from literature and which confirms that the initial test if false positive in 60% of cases. Owing to the specific fetal circulation, clinical manifestation appear after the fetal communication closure. Assessment of pre- and post- ductal saturation allows to detect heart problems until the appearance of clinical manifestation, which allows us to interfere therapeutically and surgically in time. |
